Over the summer of 2005, my friends Ehab Buhaisi, Stephen Whitmire, and I spent many afternoons tossing Frisbee outside or playing video games inside. On a few afternoons, we devoted our time to writing and recording three ridiculous songs together. There was no precedent for them, as both Ehab and Stephen were mostly unmusical, but we had a blast recording them. In a way, we sort of viewed ourselves as a sophisticated boy band.

Friends Together (2005) Lyrics by Alex Wroten, Ehab Buhaisi, and Stephen Whitmire. Music by Alex Wroten.
Alex Wroten, guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocals. Ehab Buhaisi and Stephen Whitmire, vocals.
After one afternoon of video games was about to end, I picked up my classical guitar and started playing and talking while Ehab and Stephen gathered their things to leave. Jokingly, we started singing lyrics about our strange nicknames for each other. Although I had no nickname, I offered up "Lexy". I enthusiastically suggested that we record our new masterpiece, and we spent half an hour committing it to historical record. I played all of the instruments, and the three of us sang together. It's sort of sloppy and slightly out-of-tune, but for what it is, it's strangely hilarious. At the end, I sombered the tone by recording a multi-part choral section.
Bump Bump Bump (2005) Lyrics by Ehab Buhaisi and Stephen Whitmire. Music by Alex Wroten.
Alex Wroten, computer and vocals. Ehab Buhaisi and Stephen Whitmire, vocals.
A few days after Friends Together, we decided to record a parody song in the style of The Backstreet Boys. Ehab and Stephen wrote the hilarious lyrics while I worked on the music. I improvised the various parts of the barber shop-like chorus section. My favorite part of the whole song is Stephen's great vocal emission at the 1:49 mark. We were very proud of this hilarious song, but I don't think anyone else ever thought it was as funny as we did.
Sandwich Man (2005) Lyrics by Alex Wroten, Ehab Buhaisi, and Stephen Whitmire. Music by Alex Wroten.
Alex Wroten, guitars, bass guitar, and vocals. Ehab Buhaisi, drums and vocals. Stephen Whitmire, vocals.
Soon after July 4, 2005, we were hanging out, and at dinnertime we decided to make sandwiches. I started singing some words about our sandwich-making, and we decided to record them as a song a few days later. Ehab and Stephen wrote and performed all of the verses. While feeling adventurous, Ehab asked me to let him try playing drums on this track, and I showed him a simple drum beat to play. He played it very solidly, and I added a little delay on it during the chorus to make it sound a bit more active. The brief improvised bass fill at the 1:39 mark is my favorite part of the whole thing.
